Rāvaṇa’s Austerity and Śiva’s Bestowal of Grace
Suta Goswami (narrating the Koṭirudrasaṃhitā account to the sages of Naimiṣāraṇya; the ‘I’ refers to the character being quoted within Suta’s narration)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Rudra
Offering: dhupa
The verse highlights that inner intensity (even anger when turned inward and disciplined) can be redirected into ritual action—establishing fire and preparing a pārthiva rite—so the seeker approaches Shiva through focused, embodied worship that leads toward purification and grace.
By mentioning a ‘pārthiva’ preparation along with establishing fire, it points to Saguna upāsanā—worship of Shiva through a tangible support such as an earthen liṅga—where form becomes a doorway to the formless Lord, aligning practice with devotion and right procedure.
It suggests preparing a clean ritual space, establishing sacred fire, and performing a pārthiva-liṅga oriented worship with steadiness—ideally accompanied by japa of the Pañcākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) and a disciplined, concentrated mind.
