Suta Goswami (narrating the Kotirudra Samhita account to the sages of Naimisharanya)

Tattva Level: pashu

Sthala Purana: Not a Jyotirliṅga episode; it is the narrative hinge where the collective ṛṣi-saṅgha authoritatively formulates the remedy (prāyaścitta), anticipating eventual purification and eligibility for Śiva’s anugraha.

Significance: Highlights saṅgha/ācārya consensus as dharma-pramāṇa for expiation and pilgrimage observances.

FAQs

It highlights the Shaiva scriptural method: truth about Shiva and dharma is confirmed in satsanga—when realized sages assemble, deliberate, and speak in unity, guiding seekers toward right understanding and devotion.

In Kotirudra Samhita, such rishi-dialogues commonly frame teachings on Jyotirlingas (Saguna Shiva as the luminous Linga). The verse signals a transition where the sages respond, typically leading into practical guidance on Shiva’s sacred forms and pilgrimage merits.

The implied practice is satsanga and śravaṇa (listening to Shiva-kathā) with reverence; as a takeaway, one should hear and recite Shiva Purana in a gathered assembly, supporting devotion to the Panchakshara mantra and Linga worship when the narrative proceeds to it.
