The Procedure for Offering Piṇḍa (Funerary Rice-balls) — Gayā-māhātmya
Narada (teaching in a dialogic Purana style; ritual instruction within Uttara-Bhaga)
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: bhakti
Secondary Rasa: shanta
It links outer ritual order with inner reverence: first honoring Śiva (Śaṃbhu), then making a direction-specific bali to harmonize with cosmic and moral governance (Yama), while invoking the sanctifying power of the Waters and the celestial order.
Bhakti is expressed through namaskāra (humble salutation) to Śaṃbhu and through mantra-recitation that recognizes divine presence in āpaḥ (waters) and in the cosmic luminaries—devotion embedded in disciplined practice.
Jyotiṣa (Vedāṅga astrology/astronomy) is hinted by “jyotiṣāṃ pati” and the directional rite (southern/Yama), showing how timing/directions and celestial order inform ritual procedure (vidhi).
