The Greatness of Gayā

Gayā-Māhātmya

FAQs

It presents tirtha-yatra as a powerful means of purification: for the remaining varṇas, sins are said to be destroyed, and the aspirant is directed onward to the sacred Udyanta mountain, indicating a graded pilgrimage route and accumulating merit (puṇya).

Though the verse is framed as a tirtha instruction, its underlying bhakti logic is that sacred travel and contact with holy places supports inner purification, which in the Narada Purana is a foundation for steady devotion and remembrance of the Lord.

No specific Vedāṅga (like Vyākaraṇa or Jyotiṣa) is taught here; the practical takeaway is dharma-shāstric tirtha procedure—following prescribed routes and destinations as part of prayāścitta (expiation) and merit-building.
