Kārtika-Māhātmya
The Greatness of Kārtika
तन्मुक्तो जायते पापी विष्ठाशी ग्राम्यसूकरः । मात्स्यं मांसं न भुञ्जीत न कौर्मं नापि हारिणम् ॥ ५७ ॥
tanmukto jāyate pāpī viṣṭhāśī grāmyasūkaraḥ | mātsyaṃ māṃsaṃ na bhuñjīta na kaurmaṃ nāpi hāriṇam || 57 ||
Kẻ tội lỗi, sa ngã khỏi giới hạnh ấy, sẽ sinh làm heo nhà ăn đồ uế tạp. Vì vậy chớ ăn thịt cá, chớ ăn thịt rùa, cũng chớ ăn thịt nai.
Narada
Vrata: Kartika-vrata (implied discipline)
Primary Rasa: bhayanaka
Secondary Rasa: bibhatsa
It links purity of conduct—especially keeping one’s vow and food-discipline—to karmic outcomes, warning that violation leads to degrading rebirth and loss of spiritual merit.
Bhakti is supported by sāttvika living; restraint in diet and fidelity to vows protect the devotee’s inner purity, which sustains steady remembrance and worship.
Ritual discipline (kalpa-style vrata observance) is implied: specific food prohibitions function as niyamas that preserve the efficacy of religious observances.
