न शशाक यदा बाला प्रत्याख्यातुं तमोनुदम्‌ । भीता शापात्‌ ततो राजन्‌ दध्यौ दीर्घमथान्तरम्‌,राजन्‌! जब वह बाला अन्धकारनाशक भगवान्‌ सूर्यदेवको टाल न सकी, तब शापसे भयभीत हो दीर्घकालतक मन-ही-मन कुछ सोचने लगी

na śaśāka yadā bālā pratyākhyātuṃ tamonudam | bhītā śāpāt tato rājan dadhyau dīrgham athāntaram ||

Vaiśampāyana nói: Khi thiếu nữ ấy không thể khước từ Đấng xua tan bóng tối là Thần Mặt Trời, tâu Đại vương, vì sợ lời nguyền mà nàng trầm ngâm rất lâu, tự xoay trở sự việc trong lòng. Đoạn này nêu bật sự căng thẳng đạo lý giữa nỗi sợ báo ứng thần linh và quyền tự quyết của bản thân trước một cuộc áp đến đầy uy lực của thần thánh.
