Educational Q&A

The passage highlights how sacred order is established through rightful consecration and through tapas (austerity) directed toward a higher ideal; divine power is portrayed as disciplined and beneficent—Śiva restrains Gaṅgā’s overwhelming descent and releases her for the welfare of the human world.

Yūparṇa points out a sacred locale and recalls events associated with it: the Moon’s consecration to his rank in the northern quarter, Śiva receiving the sky-falling Gaṅgā on his head and letting her flow into the human realm, and the Goddess performing austerities there to attain Śiva.
