Gālava’s Eastern Ascent with Garuḍa; Counsel on Kāla and Upāya (उद्योगपर्व, अध्याय ११०)
उत्तरेति परिख्याता सर्वकर्मसु चोत्तरा । द्विजश्रेष्ठल इन सब कारणोंसे तथा अन्यान्य गुणोंके कारण यह दिशा उत्कृष्ट है और समस्त शुभ कर्मोके लिये भी यही उत्तम मानी गयी है। इसलिये इसे उत्तर कहते हैं ।।
uttareti parikhyātā sarvakarmasu cottarā | dvijaśreṣṭha etaiḥ sarvakāraṇaiḥ tathā anyānyaguṇakāraṇaiś ca eṣā diśā utkṛṣṭā, samastaśubhakarmabhyaś ca iyam eva uttamā matā | tasmād uttarā iti ucyate ||
Phương ấy được gọi là “Uttarā” (phương Bắc), và trong mọi công việc đều được xem là bậc nhất. Hỡi bậc tối thượng trong hàng lưỡng sinh, vì những lẽ ấy—và còn bởi nhiều đức tính khác—phương này được coi là tuyệt hảo và là điềm cát tường nhất cho mọi hành vi chính pháp. Bởi vậy nó mang tên “phương Bắc”.
