Mantri-Parīkṣā — Testing Ministers, Securing Counsel, and Ethical Criteria for Advisers (अध्याय ८४)
नैकमिच्छेद् गणं हित्वा स्वाच्चेदन्यतरग्रह: । यस्त्वेको बहुभि: श्रेयान् कामं॑ तेन गणं त्यजेत्,एक ओर एक व्यक्ति हो और दूसरी ओर एक समूह हो तो समूहको छोड़कर एक व्यक्तिको ग्रहण करनेकी इच्छा न करे। परंतु जो एक मनुष्य बहुत मनुष्योंकी अपेक्षा गुणोंमें श्रेष्ठ हो और इन दोनोंमेंसे एकको ही ग्रहण करना पड़े तो ऐसी परिस्थितिमें कल्याण चाहनेवाले पुरुषको उस एकके लिये समूहको त्याग देना चाहिये
naikam icched gaṇaṁ hitvā svāc ced anyataragrahaḥ | yas tv eko bahubhiḥ śreyān kāmaṁ tena gaṇaṁ tyajet ||
Bhishma nói: Khi bị buộc phải chọn chỉ một phía, chớ vì lấy một người mà bỏ cả một đoàn thể. Nhưng nếu người ấy thật sự vượt trội về phẩm giá so với nhiều người, và việc chọn giữa hai bên là điều không thể tránh, thì kẻ cầu điều thiện nên vì người xuất chúng ấy mà từ bỏ đoàn thể.

Bhishma, in his Shanti Parva instruction on dharma and right conduct, offers a principle for weighing alternatives: ordinarily prefer the collective, but allow an exception when a uniquely superior person embodies greater good than the multitude.
