नारायण: स विश्वात्मा तेनास्य शितिकण्ठता । यह देख रुद्र तपस्यामें लगे हुए उन ऋषियोंपर टूट पड़े। तब विश्वात्मा नारायणने अपने हाथसे उन आक्रमणकारी रुद्रदेवका गला पकड़ लिया। इसीसे उनका कण्ठ नीला हो जानेके कारण वे “नीलकण्ठ' के नामसे प्रसिद्ध हुए
nārāyaṇaḥ sa viśvātmā tenāsya śitikaṇṭhatā |
“Nārāyaṇa, Bản Ngã bao trùm vũ trụ, đã nắm lấy cổ Rudra khi Rudra xông tới định tấn công các hiền sĩ đang hành khổ hạnh. Vì cổ họ trở nên xanh sẫm do cú nắm ấy, từ đó Rudra được biết đến với danh hiệu ‘Nīlakaṇṭha’ (Đấng Cổ Xanh).”
