Shloka 35

अव्यक्त–प्रकृति–इन्द्रियविचारः

The Unmanifest, Prakṛtis, and the Sense-Complex

स्नेहपाशैर्बहुविधेरासक्तमनसो नरा: । प्रकृतिस्था विषीदन्ति जले सैकतवेश्मवत्‌

snehapāśair bahuvidhair āsaktamanaso narāḥ | prakṛtisthā viṣīdanti jale saikataveśmavat ||

Parāśara nói: “Những kẻ có tâm bị trói buộc bởi muôn thứ dây ái luyến sẽ chìm trong u sầu sâu thẳm, dẫu vẫn ở trong trạng thái tự nhiên thường nhật. Như ngôi nhà cát sụp đổ trong nước, họ bị nỗi khổ lớn đẩy đến gần chỗ tiêu vong.”

Attachment (sneha) acts like a binding noose on the mind; when one’s happiness depends on such bonds, sorrow easily overwhelms and can bring a person close to ruin. The verse urges cultivating detachment and inner steadiness so that affection does not become bondage.

In Śānti Parva’s instruction on conduct and liberation-oriented wisdom, the sage Parāśara speaks to illustrate the fragility of worldly dependence. He uses the image of a sand-house collapsing in water to show how quickly an attached mind collapses under the pressure of loss and change.
