Adhyāya 283: Varṇa-vṛtti, Nyāya-ārjana, and the Decline-and-Restoration of Dharma (वर्णवृत्तिः न्यायार्जनं च)

devyā manyukṛtaṃ matvā kruddhaḥ sarvātmakaḥ prabhuḥ | prasādāt tasya dakṣeṇa sa yajñaḥ sandhitaḥ katham | etad veditum iccheyaṃ tan me brūhi yathātatham ||

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the ethical tension between righteous anger at wrongdoing and the higher resolution through grace and reconciliation: even when cosmic order is disturbed by insult and exclusion, restoration becomes possible through divine favor and proper settlement.

Janamejaya asks how Dakṣa’s sacrificial rite could still be completed after Śiva, angered by the Goddess’s affront, rose in wrath—seeking a precise account of how the sacrifice was ultimately restored through Śiva’s appeased grace.
