ब्राह्मणस्य पूर्वतरा वृत्तिः — The Earlier Ideal Conduct of a Brahmana
River-of-Saṃsāra Metaphor
तानिदानीं न पश्यामि यैर्भुक्तेयं पुरा मही । जिन लोगोंने पहले वृक्ष, ओषधि, रत्न, जीव-जन्तु, वन और खानोंसहित इस सारी पृथ्वीका उपभोग किया है, उन सबको मैं इस समय नहीं देखता हूँ ।।
bhīṣma uvāca | tān idānīṃ na paśyāmi yair bhukteyaṃ purā mahī | pṛthur ailomayo bhīmo narakaḥ śambaras tathā | kālenābhyāhatāḥ sarve kālo hi balavattaraḥ |
Bhīṣma nói: “Nay ta không còn thấy những kẻ xưa kia đã hưởng dùng và cai trị cõi đất này. Pṛthu, Purūravas—con của Ilā—Maya, Bhīma, Naraka, và Śambara nữa: tất thảy đều bị Thời gian quật ngã; bởi Thời gian là sức mạnh lớn hơn.” Qua lời suy niệm ấy, Bhīṣma chỉ ra rằng ngay cả những bậc thống trị và hữu thể đáng sợ nhất cũng tiêu tan, để dạy sự buông bỏ đối với quyền lực và kiêu mạn, và nhấn mạnh sự cấp thiết của việc sống theo dharma thay vì bám víu vào quyền uy chóng tàn.
