Educational Q&A

The verse distinguishes between what is merely pleasing (priya) and what is genuinely beneficial (hita), presenting an ethical ideal: a responsible elder or ally should commit to actions that serve true welfare, not only immediate gratification.

Bhīṣma, speaking in the Śānti Parva context of counsel and reassurance, expresses a pledge: once he is released from a present crisis, he will, with the support of his friends and relatives, undertake and accomplish the listener’s desired and welfare-promoting tasks.
