Kośa, Bala, and Maryādā: Treasury, Capacity, and Enforceable Limits (कोश-बल-मर्यादा)
स्वधर्मानन्तरा वृत्तिर्जात्याननुपजीवत: । जहत: प्रथमं कल्पमनुकल्पेन जीवनम्
svadharmānantara vṛttir jātyān anupajīvataḥ | jahataḥ prathamaṃ kalpam anukalpena jīvanam ||
Bhīṣma nói: “Khi một người không thể duy trì sự sống bằng cách nương theo bổn phận được quy định cho chính dòng sinh và địa vị của mình, thì cũng có dạy một phương kế sinh nhai thay thế. Bởi trong thời khốn cùng, kẻ buộc phải rời bỏ con đường thứ nhất—sống thuận theo svadharma của mình—được phép sống theo con đường thứ hai, thậm chí nhận lấy nghề nghiệp của một tầng lớp thấp hơn, để bảo toàn mạng sống mà không rơi vào vô pháp.”
