Determining the Roots of Dharma, Artha, and Kāma
Mahābhārata, Śānti-parva 123
The verse teaches a hierarchical transmission of sacred potency and responsibility: sages give rise to Soma, Soma to the eternal gods, and from the gods the Brāhmaṇas inherit the duty of constant vigilance—remaining ‘awake’ to protect and sustain dharma in the world.
Vasuharomā is instructing his listener by stating a doctrinal lineage of authority and world-protection: divine and ritual power is traced through revered sources, culminating in the Brāhmaṇas’ role as wakeful guardians and guides within society.
