त्रिवर्गमूलनिश्चयः — Determining the Roots of Dharma, Artha, and Kāma
Mahābhārata, Śānti-parva 123
महादेवस्ततस्तस्मिन् वृत्ते यज्ञे यथाविधि । दण्डं धर्मस्य गोप्तारं विष्णवे सत्कृतं ददौ
mahādevastatastasmīn vṛtte yajñe yathāvidhi | daṇḍaṃ dharmasya goptāraṃ viṣṇave satkṛtaṃ dadau ||
Vasuharoma nói: Khi lễ tế ấy đã được cử hành và hoàn tất đúng theo nghi thức, Mahādeva tôn kính Viṣṇu—đấng hộ trì Dharma—rồi trao cho Ngài cây trượng trừng phạt (daṇḍa), biểu tượng của quyền trị quốc theo chính đạo. Hành động ấy cho thấy quyền năng ngăn chặn điều ác phải được vận dụng để phụng sự Dharma và chỉ nên ký thác cho bậc xứng đáng.
