Nīti-upadeśa to a Rājaputra: Self-restraint, Alliances, and Rival-Management (नीतिउपदेशः)
The verse emphasizes that a rare encounter with a wise teacher should be made meaningful: one should seek and receive dharma-instruction so that the meeting becomes ‘amogha’—truly fruitful rather than wasted.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction-setting, Bhishma speaks in response to the seeker’s approach for guidance. The line frames the moment as an earnest request that their present meeting culminate in practical teaching on righteous conduct and governance.
