गदामुद्यम्य वेगेन हृदि द्रौणिमताडयत्‌ । उत्तमौजाको राक्षसद्वारा मारा गया समझकर युधामन्यु भी वहाँ आ पहुँचा। उसने बड़े वेगसे गदा उठाकर अश्वत्थामाकी छातीमें प्रहार किया

gadām udyamya vegena hṛdi drauṇim atāḍayat |

Sañjaya nói: Tưởng rằng Uttamaujā đã bị con rākṣasa nơi cửa trại giết hại, Yudhāmanyu cũng lao tới đó. Ông nhấc chùy lên với tốc lực lớn và giáng vào ngực con trai Droṇa (Aśvatthāmā). Đoạn này nêu bật sự hỗn loạn của chiến tranh ban đêm: đau thương và ngộ nhận thúc đẩy sự trả đũa tức thì, bạo liệt, thay vì sự tự chế được cân nhắc theo dharma.
