Jarāsandha as Obstacle to the Rājasūya — Kṛṣṇa’s Strategic Genealogical Brief

Sabhā Parva, Adhyāya 13

parigrahān narendrasya bhīmasya paripālanāt | śatrūṇāṃ kṣapaṇāc caiva bībhatsaḥ savyasācinaḥ || nikāmavarṣāḥ sphītāś ca āsañjanapadās tathā | mahārāja yudhiṣṭhiraḥ sarvān ātmīyajanān iva abhyagṛhṇāt, bhīmasenaḥ sarveṣāṃ rakṣāṃ karoti, savyasācī arjunaḥ śatrūṇāṃ saṃhāre lagnaḥ, buddhimān sahadevaḥ sarvān dharmam upadiśati, nakulaś ca svabhāvena sarvaiḥ saha vinayapūrvaṃ vyavaharati; ataḥ tasya rājyasya sarve janapadāḥ kalahāśūnyāḥ, nirbhayāḥ, svadharmaparāyaṇāḥ tathā unnatiśīlāḥ; tatra ca yathākāmaṃ kāle kāle varṣā bhavanti.

Educational Q&A

A stable and prosperous kingdom arises when each leader fulfills a complementary dharmic role: the king governs with restraint and fairness, protectors ensure public safety, defenders neutralize threats, the wise teach dharma, and the courteous maintain social cohesion—resulting in harmony, security, and even nature’s cooperation through timely rains.

Vaiśampāyana describes the well-ordered state under Yudhiṣṭhira: he treats all as his own, Bhīma safeguards the people, Arjuna suppresses enemies, Sahadeva gives dharma-instruction, and Nakula behaves with humility; consequently the provinces are peaceful, fearless, dutiful, and prosperous, with rains arriving in season.
