अध्याय १: महाप्रस्थानारम्भः
The Commencement of the Great Departure
प्रस्थितान् द्रौपदीषष्ठान् पुरा द्यृूतजितान् यथा । हर्षोउभवच्च सर्वेषां भ्रातृणां गमन॑ प्रति
prasthitān draupadī-ṣaṣṭhān purā dyūtajitān yathā | harṣo 'bhavac ca sarveṣāṃ bhrātṝṇāṃ gamanaṃ prati ||
Vaiśampāyana nói: Khi họ lên đường—những bậc trượng phu hàng đầu ấy, năm anh em với Draupadī là người thứ sáu—như thuở trước họ đã vào rừng sau khi thua trong ván xúc xắc, thì hôm ấy cũng vậy, phụ nữ trong thành khóc than khi thấy họ ra đi. Nhưng đối với tất cả anh em ấy, chính cuộc hành trình này lại trở thành nguồn hoan hỷ lớn lao.
