इन्द्र और शम्बरासुरके समान एक-दूसरेसे डाह रखनेवाले उन दोनों वीरोंमें उस समय घोर युद्ध आरम्भ हुआ, जो कायरोंके हृदयमें भय उत्पन्न करनेवाला था ।।

indra-śambarāsura-samāv anyonyasya dāhaṃ dhārayantau tau vīrau tadā ghoraṃ yuddham ārabhētām, yat kāyarāṇāṃ hṛdayeṣu bhayaṃ janayati ||
tayor dhvajī vītamalau śuśubhāte rathe sthitau |
rāhu-ketū yathākāśe uditau jagataḥ kṣaye ||
Sañjaya nói: Khi ấy, một trận chiến ghê gớm bùng nổ giữa hai dũng sĩ, vốn mang mối hằn thù lẫn nhau như Indra và ác quỷ Shambara—một cuộc giao tranh khiến tim kẻ nhát gan cũng run sợ. Trên chiến xa của họ, những lá cờ tinh sạch rực sáng, như thể vào lúc thế gian tan rã, Rahu và Ketu cùng mọc lên trên bầu trời.
