Prelude to Karṇa’s Slaying
बिभयाद् युवती श्यामा तद्वदासीद् वसुंधरा । मांसशोणितचित्रेव शातकुम्भमयीव च
bibhyād yuvatī śyāmā tadvad āsīd vasuṃdharā | māṃsaśoṇitacitreva śātakumbhamayīva ca ||
Sañjaya nói: Chính mặt đất dường như cũng run sợ—như một thiếu nữ da sẫm; chiến địa cũng hiện ra như thế. Bị bôi nhòe và loang lổ bởi thịt và máu, mảnh đất ấy lại nghịch lý như thể làm bằng vàng—một hình ảnh phơi bày cái giá ghê gớm của chiến tranh và sự chênh lệch đạo lý giữa vinh quang võ trận với nỗi đau của con người.
