Adhyāya 17 — गजयुद्ध-वृत्तान्तः, सहदेव-दुःशासन-संघर्षः, नकुल-कर्ण-समागमः

स वेदनार्तोम्बुदनिस्वनो नदं- श्वरन भ्रमन् प्रस्खलितान्तरोड<द्रवत् । पपात रुग्ण: सनियन्तृकस्तथा यथा गिरिव॑जविदारितस्तथा
sa vedanārto ’mbudanisvano nadaṁśvaraṁ bhraman praskhalitāntaro dravat | papāta rugṇaḥ sa-niyantrakas tathā yathā girivajra-vidāritaḥ tathā ||
Sañjaya nói: Bị hành hạ bởi đau đớn, con voi gầm rống như tiếng sấm mây. Nó hoảng loạn chạy tán loạn, quay cuồng khắp nơi, liên tiếp loạng choạng. Rồi, vì thương tích quá nặng, nó đổ sụp xuống đất cùng người điều khiển, như một ngọn núi bị sét đánh bổ đôi mà sập xuống. Cảnh ấy nhấn mạnh đà tiến tàn nhẫn của chiến tranh, nơi cả những sinh linh hùng mạnh và người chăm giữ chúng đều bị cuốn vào khổ đau và diệt vong.
