वीरास्थिशर्करां रौद्रां भेरीमुरजकच्छपाम्‌ । चर्मवर्मप्लवां घोरां केशशैवलशाद्धलाम्‌

Transliteration

vīrāsthiśarkarāṁ raudrāṁ bherīmurajakacchapām | carmavarmaplavāṁ ghorāṁ keśaśaivalśādvalām ||

Translation

Sañjaya nói: Drona đã khiến chiến địa chảy thành một dòng sông máu ghê rợn, như nước của thời đại hủy diệt. Trong dòng chảy khủng khiếp ấy, xương của các dũng sĩ như cát sỏi; trống trận và trống lớn như rùa; khiên và áo giáp nổi như thuyền; tóc kết thành rong rêu và cỏ dại dọc theo dòng. Hình tượng này không nhằm ca tụng chiến thắng, mà phơi bày nỗi kinh hoàng đạo lý và cái giá không thể tránh của chiến tranh—khi võ nghệ được thả lỏng, chiến trường hóa thành dòng nước cuốn trôi cả người can đảm lẫn kẻ khiếp nhược.
