Educational Q&A

The verse sets an ethical frame for the coming description: war is portrayed as "lomaharṣaṇa"—awe-inspiring and dreadful—implying that martial glory is inseparable from moral weight. It also highlights leadership and responsibility: those who stand at the front (like Yuyudhāna) bear heightened accountability for the course and cost of conflict.

Sanjaya begins a new segment of his report to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, inviting him to hear about a fierce battle involving Droṇa and the Pāṇḍava forces, led in the vanguard by Yuyudhāna (Sātyaki).
