संजय उवाच
The verse foregrounds the ethical pressure of kṣatriya leadership: war is not only force but also disciplined strategy and responsibility. By highlighting an ‘impregnable’ formation guarded by Arjuna, it frames how prowess and protection (rakṣaṇa) become moral burdens—leaders must assess reality clearly and act without delusion, even amid fearsome circumstances.
Sanjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Duryodhana observes the terrifying, hard-to-break Krauñca battle-array, protected by Arjuna. This sight sets up Duryodhana’s subsequent move: he goes to his senior warriors/teachers and speaks in a way meant to rouse and organize them for the coming clash.
