एवं द्वन्दडसहस्राणि रथवारणवाजिनाम् । पदातीनां च समरे तव तेषां च संकुले,इस प्रकार उस घमासान युद्धमें आपके और पाण्डवपक्षके रथ, हाथी, घोड़े और पैदल सैन्यके सहसोरों योद्धाओंमें द्वन्ध-युद्ध चल रहा था
evaṁ dvandva-sahasrāṇi ratha-vāraṇa-vājinām | padātīnāṁ ca samare tava teṣāṁ ca saṅkule ||
Sañjaya thưa: Vì thế, trên chiến địa dày đặc hỗn mang—nơi quân của bệ hạ và quân của họ trộn lẫn vào nhau—đã diễn ra hàng ngàn hàng vạn cuộc quyết đấu giữa các chiến binh xa chiến, kỵ tượng, kỵ mã và bộ binh. Cảnh ấy gợi lên sự hỗn loạn đạo lý của chiến tranh: khi hai đạo quân va chạm, lòng dũng cảm và bổn phận riêng (svadharma) của từng người bị thử thách giữa cơn rối loạn ngập tràn và sự hủy diệt lẫn nhau.
