शरतल्पे महेष्वासं शयानं पुरुषर्षभम्‌ | रथात्‌ प्रपतितं चैनं दिव्यो भाव: समाविशत्‌,रथसे गिरकर बाणशय्यापर सोये हुए पुरुषप्रवर महाधनुर्धर भीष्मके भीतर दिव्यभावका आवेश हुआ

śarat-talpe maheṣvāsaṃ śayānaṃ puruṣarṣabham | rathāt prapatitaṃ cainaṃ divyo bhāvaḥ samāviśat ||

Sañjaya nói: Khi Bhīṣma, bậc đại cung thủ—“con bò mộng” giữa loài người—nằm trên giường tên, sau khi rơi khỏi chiến xa, một trạng thái thần diệu đã nhập vào ngài. Giữa bạo lực chiến tranh và sự sụp đổ của thân xác, câu chuyện ghi dấu một sự thăng hoa nội tâm: thất bại bên ngoài của chiến binh trở thành ngưỡng cửa của một cảnh giới cao hơn, vững chãi hơn.
