तमेक॑ छादयामासुर्मेघा इव दिवाकरम् । भीष्म भागीरथीपुत्र प्रतपन्तं रणे रिपून्,परंतप! जैसे बादल सूर्यको ढक लेते हैं, उसी प्रकार उन वीरोंने पैदल, घुड़सवार तथा रथियोंके समुदायसे एवं बहुसंख्यक बाणोंद्वारा भीष्मको आच्छादित कर दिया। उस समय गंगानन्दन भीष्म अकेले युद्धके मैदानमें शत्रुओंको अत्यन्त संतप्त कर रहे थे

Sanjaya nói: Như mây che mặt trời, các dũng sĩ ấy đã phủ kín Bhīṣma—vây quanh ông bằng đoàn bộ binh, kỵ binh và chiến xa đông đảo, lại trút xuống vô số mũi tên. Nhưng khi ấy, Bhīṣma, con của Bhāgīrathī (sông Gaṅgā), vẫn đứng một mình trên chiến địa, dữ dội thiêu đốt hàng ngũ quân thù—hỡi kẻ khuất phục địch quân.
