तारापतिमिवापूर्णमन्तकाले यदृच्छया । 'शत्रुसूदन! मैं सब शत्रुओंका अन्त कर डालूँगा। देखिये, आज ही मैं पूर्ण चन्द्रमाके समान दुर्जय वीर महारथी भीष्मको उनके अन्तिम समयमें इच्छानुसार मार गिराता हूँ ।।

Transliteration

tārāpatim ivāpūrṇam antakāle yadṛcchayā |

Translation

Sañjaya nói: “Như thể (đánh gục) chúa tể của muôn sao—vầng trăng—khi còn chưa tròn, vào đúng thời khắc tận cùng đã định, lại như bởi một sự ngẫu nhiên…” (Câu này mở đầu cho lời thề đầy khí phách của Arjuna sẽ quật ngã Bhīṣma, ví hành động ấy như một kỳ công phi thường, gần như trái lẽ thường; qua đó gợi lên thế giằng co đạo lý giữa lời thệ của người anh hùng, số mệnh, và sự tất yếu lạnh lùng của chiến tranh.)
