Umā’s Inquiry and the Manifestation of the Third Eye (उमा–प्रश्नः तृतीयनेत्रोत्पत्तिः)
(अग्निसंरक्षणपरा गृहशुद्धि च कारये । कुमारान् पालये नित्यं कुमारी परिशिक्षये ।।
agnisaṁrakṣaṇaparā gṛhaśuddhiṁ ca kāraye | kumārān pālaye nityaṁ kumārī pariśikṣaye || ātmapriyāṇi hitvāpi garbhasaṁrakṣaṇe ratā | bālānāṁ varjaye nityaṁ śāpaṁ kopaṁ pratāpanam || avikṣiptāni dhānyāni nānnavikṣepaṇaṁ gṛhe | ratnavat spṛhaye gehe gāvaḥ sayavasodakāḥ || samudgamya ca śuddhāhaṁ bhikṣāṁ dadyāṁ dvijātiṣu || pravāsaṁ yadi me yāti bhartā kāryeṇa kenacit | maṅgalair bahubhir yuktā bhavāmi niyatā tadā ||
Bhishma nói: “Ta một lòng gìn giữ ngọn lửa thiêng trong gia thất và giữ nhà cửa thanh tịnh bằng việc quét dọn, tẩy uế thường xuyên. Mỗi ngày ta chăm nom con trẻ và dạy các thiếu nữ về bổn phận, nề nếp của người nữ. Dẫu phải gác bỏ những món ăn mình ưa thích, ta vẫn luôn chuyên chú bảo hộ thai nhi. Ta đã vĩnh viễn từ bỏ việc rủa mắng con trẻ, trút giận lên chúng hay làm chúng đau khổ bằng bất cứ cách nào. Trong nhà ta, thóc lúa không bao giờ bị vãi vương, thức ăn cũng không bị phung phí. Ta chăm đàn bò trong nhà—cho ăn cỏ rơm, cho uống nước—quý giữ sự an toàn của chúng như giữ một viên bảo châu. Và khi thân tâm thanh tịnh, ta bước ra dâng bố thí cho hàng ‘nhị sinh’ (Bà-la-môn). Nếu phu quân ta đi xa vì một việc gì, ta giữ mình nghiêm cẩn, tự chế, và thực hành nhiều nghi lễ cát tường để cầu phúc cho chàng.”
