Dāna-Śreṣṭhatā: On the Superiority of Giving
Maitreya–Vyāsa Exemplum
अहमासं मनुष्यो वै शूद्रो बहुधन: प्रभो । अब्रद्याण्यो नृशंसश्न कदर्यो वृद्धिजीवन:
aham āsaṁ manuṣyo vai śūdro bahu-dhanaḥ prabho | abrāhmaṇyo nṛśaṁsaś ca kadaryo vṛddhi-jīvanaḥ prabho ||
Con côn trùng ấy thưa: “Bạch Chúa tể, trong một kiếp trước, tôi từng là người—lại là một Śūdra rất giàu có. Tôi chẳng hề kính trọng các Brāhmaṇa; tôi thô bạo, tàn nhẫn, keo kiệt, và sống bằng nghề cho vay nặng lãi. Vì những hạnh nghiệp ấy, tôi đã sa vào cảnh hèn mọn này.”
