ययातिः शर्मिष्ठायाः ऋतुप्रार्थनां धर्मसंवादं च शृणोति

यथा मम गुरुर्नित्यं मान्य: शुक्र: पिता तव । देवयानि तथैव त्वं नैवं मां वक्तुमहसि,देवयानी! जैसे मेरे गुरुदेव तुम्हारे पिता शुक्राचार्य सदा मेरे माननीय हैं, उसी प्रकार तुम हो; अतः तुम्हें मुझसे ऐसी बात नहीं कहनी चाहिये
yathā mama gurur nityaṁ mānyaḥ śukraḥ pitā tava | devayāni tathaiva tvaṁ naivaṁ māṁ vaktum arhasi, devayāni ||
Kacha nói: “Cũng như phụ thân nàng là Śukra—bậc thầy của ta—luôn đáng để ta kính trọng, thì nàng cũng vậy. Vì thế, Devayānī, nàng không nên nói với ta theo cách ấy.”
कच उवाच
The verse emphasizes maryādā (propriety): respect owed to one’s guru extends to the guru’s household, and ethical speech requires restraint—one should not address another harshly or improperly, especially within relationships grounded in reverence.
Kacha addresses Devayānī, reminding her that since her father Śukra is his revered teacher, she too deserves honor from him; on that basis he rebukes her, saying she should not speak to him in such a manner.
