आस्तीककथाप्रारम्भः — Beginning of the Āstīka Narrative

सनाम्नीं चोद्यतां भार्या गृह्लीयामिति तस्य हि । मनो निविष्टमभवज्जरत्कारोर्महात्मन:,उन महात्मा जरत्कारुका मन इस बातपर स्थिर हो गया था कि मेरे-जैसे नामवाली कन्या यदि उपलब्ध हो तो उसीको पत्नीरूपमें ग्रहण करूँ:
sanāmnīṁ codyatāṁ bhāryā gṛhlīyām iti tasya hi | mano niviṣṭam abhavaj jaratkāror mahātmanaḥ ||
Śaunaka nói: Tâm trí của Jaratkāru, bậc đại hồn, đã quyết định vững chắc như sau: “Nếu một thiếu nữ mang cùng tên với ta được dâng đến, ta sẽ nhận nàng làm vợ.” Lời ấy nhấn mạnh sự tự chế có tính lời nguyện: hôn nhân không được theo đuổi vì khoái lạc hay danh vọng, mà như một bổn phận chỉ được thực hiện khi điều kiện đạo lý ràng buộc ấy được đáp ứng.
