Veṅkaṭācala Māhātmya: Bhakti-Lakṣaṇa, Nārasiṁha-tīrtha, and the Secret Darśana-Vidhi of Śrīnivāsa
Lord Vishnu (teaching Garuda; ‘Devi’ is part of the verse’s address/style)
Concept: Śauca (purity) and bhakti unite: cleanse with water, bow to the avatāra (Bhūvarāha), and enter the holy place chanting Govinda.
Vedantic Theme: Nāma-smaraṇa as a direct purifier of mind; avatāra as accessible form of the Supreme for devotion.
Application: Before worship/important spiritual practice: perform a brief purification (wash hands/face, sip water mindfully), offer a bow, and begin with a simple repeated divine name.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Type: tīrtha (sacred bathing place) and city/kshetra entry
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 3.24.81 (aṣṭāṅga-namaskāra and shrine entry)
This verse presents ācamana (ritual sipping for purity), snāna (bath), and namaskāra (bowing) as preparatory acts that make the devotee fit to approach a tīrtha and enter a sacred place with devotional focus.
It explicitly instructs entering Ayodhyā while repeatedly uttering ‘Govinda,’ indicating nāma-japa as a direct, accessible form of devotion aligned with sacred travel and worship.
Before visiting a temple or sacred site, observe simple purity (wash, calm the mind), offer respectful salutations, and keep steady remembrance through a mantra such as ‘Govinda’ to maintain devotion and ethical conduct.
