Lord Vishnu (teaching Garuda/Vinata-putra in the Preta Kanda ritual context)

Concept: Offerings are received through divine agency; honoring Viṣṇu’s pāriṣada (attendant) and Agni aligns the act with devotion and proper transmission.

Vedantic Theme: Karma offered to Īśvara becomes purified (īśvara-arpita); intermediaries (Agni, attendants) function within the one sacrificial order.

Application: Before offering (homa/naivedya), consciously dedicate the act to Viṣṇu; recite the directional address and invoke Agni as receiver to cultivate intentionality.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Type: directional altar-space (fire quarter)

Related Themes: Garuda Purana 3.24.118 (sāyudha formula); Garuda Purana 3.24.120–121 (dikpāla sequence continues)

FAQs

This verse frames the offering as properly “received” through a sanctioned divine agency—saluting Viṣṇu’s attendant emphasizes correct ritual authorization and acceptance of the rite.

“Āgneya” marks the offering as belonging to Agni’s sphere; Agni functions as the ritual carrier and purifier, ensuring the oblation is conveyed according to the prescribed method.

When performing śrāddha or memorial offerings, follow a consistent, respectful procedure—clear invocations, correct intention, and disciplined repetition (“pūrvavat”) are treated as essential to ritual integrity.
