The Universal Form (Virāṭ-Puruṣa): The Lord’s Entry into the Elements, the Devas, and the Origin of Varṇāśrama
हिरण्मय: स पुरुष: सहस्रपरिवत्सरान् । आण्डकोश उवासाप्सु सर्वसत्त्वोपबृंहित: ॥ ६ ॥
hiraṇmayaḥ sa puruṣaḥ sahasra-parivatsarān āṇḍa-kośa uvāsāpsu sarva-sattvopabṛṁhitaḥ
Đấng Virāṭ-puruṣa vĩ đại, được gọi là Hiraṇmaya, đã an trụ một nghìn năm thiên giới trên mặt nước của vũ trụ, trong vỏ trứng vũ trụ; mọi chúng sinh đều nằm cùng với Ngài.
After the Lord entered each and every universe as the Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, half of the universe was filled with water. The cosmic manifestation of the planetary systems, outer space, etc., which are visible to us, is only one half of the complete universe. Before the manifestation takes place and after the entrance of Viṣṇu within the universe, there is a period of one thousand celestial years. All the living entities injected within the womb of the mahat-tattva are divided in all universes with the incarnation of Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, and all of them lie down with the Lord until Brahmā is born. Brahmā is the first living being within the universe, and from him all other demigods and living creatures are born. Manu is the original father of mankind, and therefore, in Sanskrit, mankind is called mānuṣya. Humanity in different bodily qualities is distributed throughout the various planetary systems.
This verse states that the golden Supreme Person remained within the shell of the cosmic egg, situated in the primordial waters, sustaining all living beings within that universal enclosure.
In the creation narrative of Canto 3, Śukadeva explains a measured, orderly unfolding of creation—showing that the universe develops under the Lord’s supervision and time potency, not by accident.
It encourages trust that life is governed by higher order and purpose—supporting steadiness in devotion, patience during ‘waiting periods,’ and humility before the vast intelligence behind creation.
