Hiraṇyakaśipu’s Austerities and Brahmā’s Boons
The Architecture of ‘Conditional Immortality’
Lord Brahmā was waiting for the austerities performed by Hiraṇyakaśipu to mature so that he could go there and offer benedictions according to Hiraṇyakaśipu’s desire. Now, taking the opportunity of being accompanied by all the demigods and great saintly persons, Brahmā went there to award him the benediction he desired.
Because Hiraṇyakaśipu’s severe austerities were disturbing the universe, the devas petitioned Brahmā to intervene; this verse describes Brahmā responding to their appeal.
Ātmabhūḥ means “self-born” and refers to Lord Brahmā, who is said to manifest without ordinary material birth.
When imbalance or harm arises, seek guidance through proper authority and wise counsel—here, the devas approach Brahmā, and Brahmā proceeds with saintly associates to address the situation.
