Chapter 371 — Yama-Niyama and Praṇava-Upāsanā (Oṅkāra) as Brahma-vidyā
Lord Agni (in instruction to sage Vasiṣṭha, in the usual Agni Purāṇa dialogue frame)
Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Mantra","secondary_vidya":"Vyakarana","practical_application":"Practice Oṃ-japa with correct phonemic segmentation (A-U-M) and awareness of the ardha-matra (anusvara/nada resonance) for meditative and ritual efficacy.","sutra_style":true}
Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Definition","entry_title":"Pranava as Vangmaya; A-U-M with Ardha-matra","lookup_keywords":["pranava","vangmaya","a-u-m","ardha-matra","om-japa"],"quick_summary":"Oṃ is identified with the totality of articulated speech. Its correct practice is defined through its phonemic constituents A, U, M and the subtle half-matra resonance that completes the sound."}
Concept: Sound (vak) culminates in pranava; correct articulation leads to contemplative absorption.
Application: In japa: elongate A→U→M smoothly, then rest in the fading resonance (ardha-matra) with attention at the heart or between eyebrows, per one’s tradition.
Khanda Section: Mantra-shastra (Pranava/Om-upasana; Vedic phonetics and sacred syllable doctrine)
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A teacher points to a palm-leaf diagram of Oṃ broken into A, U, M and a subtle trailing resonance, while a student practices measured chanting.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural, guru and shishya seated, stylized sound-waves forming A-U-M, glowing tail for ardha-matra, warm earthy tones, sacred classroom within temple corridor","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore style, large Oṃ with gold embossing, three petals/segments labeled A U M, a fine golden filament for ardha-matra, guru instructing with veena-like sonic motif, ornate border","mysore_prompt":"Mysore painting, instructional phonetics chart, clear depiction of mouth positions and flowing A→U→M, subtle resonance shown as fading line, calm scholarly ambience","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, calligraphed A U M on a folio, teacher in a library pavilion, student chanting, delicate sound-scroll motif trailing into the air"}
Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"instructional","suggested_raga":"Bhairav","pace":"slow","voice_tone":"instructional"}
Sandhi Resolution Notes: vāṅmayaḥ = vāc-mayaḥ; tasmāt praṇavam abhyaset (sandhi in continuous text); tathokāraḥ = tathā ukāraḥ; makāraś cārdhamātrayā = makāraḥ ca ardha-mātrayā.
Related Themes: Agni Purana: Mantra-shastra on pranava-nyasa and japa-vidhi (related sections); Agni Purana: Sahitya/phonetics passages on matra and svara (later in same khanda)
It teaches Praṇava-upāsanā: disciplined repetition and contemplation of Oṃ as composed of A, U, M plus the subtle ardha-mātrā (the concluding resonance/nāda).
It preserves a compact, technical doctrine of sacred phonetics and mantra-theory (śabda-tattva), showing the Agni Purāṇa’s coverage beyond mythology into practical spiritual disciplines and linguistic/ritual science.
By grounding practice in the Praṇava as the essence of all speech, it frames Oṃ-japa and contemplation as a direct purifier of mind and a unifying support for meditation leading toward spiritual realization.
