The Fivefold Rudra Rite

Concept: Deity assignment varies by textual unit (mantra-group, portion, anuvāka); the same corpus can invoke Śakti (Umā) and Śiva (Rudra) in structured sequence.
Application: In recitation, explicitly set devatā per unit: invoke Umā for Mano-dvaya, then Rudra/Rudras, and treat the first anuvāka as centered on Eka-Rudra for focused upāsanā.

It gives the viniyoga-style mapping of which deity is to be invoked as the presiding divinity (devatā) for specific Rudra-related recitation units (anuvāka/sections), including Umā, Rudra/Rudras, and Eka-Rudra.
Beyond mythic narration, it preserves procedural ritual metadata—how Vedic/Śaiva mantra portions are classified and linked to specific deities—showing the Purana’s role as a compendium for practical liturgy and mantra-application.
Correctly assigning the devatā for each recitation aligns intention and invocation with the mantra’s power, supporting focused worship of Rudra/Umā and traditionally enhancing the rite’s efficacy and purificatory merit.
