Mantra 1
अचिक्रदद्वृषा हरिर्महान्मित्रो न दर्शतः सं सूर्येण दिद्युते
The tawny bull hath cried aloud; great, and like Mitra, fair to look upon, he shines forth in union with the sun.
Mantra 2
आ ते दक्षं मयोभुवं वह्निमद्या वृणीमहे पान्तमा पुरुस्पृहम्
We choose to-day thy efficacious power, the giver of delight, the bearer (of the rite’s reward), most protecting, and desired of many.
Mantra 3
अध्वर्यो अद्रिभिः सुतं सोमं पवित्र आ नय पुनीहीन्द्राय पातवे
O Adhvaryu, lead hither to the strainer the Soma that hath been pressed with the stones; purify it for Indra to drink.
Mantra 4
तरत्स मन्दी धावति धारा सुतस्यान्धसः तरत्स मन्दी धावति
The gladdening stream of the expressed juice runs on, overcoming (all impediments); the gladdening stream runs on.
Mantra 5
आ पवस्व सहस्रिणं रयिं सोम सुवीर्यम् अस्मे श्रवांसि धारय
Purify thyself and flow hither, O Soma, bringing thousandfold wealth and excellent vigour; establish in us glories (renown).
Mantra 6
अनु प्रत्नास आयवः पदं नवीयो अक्रमुः रुचे जनन्त सूर्यम्
Following the ancients, the worshippers have advanced upon a newer station; for splendour they generate the sun (i.e., they bring forth light).
Mantra 7
अर्षा सोम द्युमत्तमो ऽभि द्रोणानि रोरुवत् सीदन्योनौ योनेष्वा
Flow, O Soma, most splendid, roaring as thou goest, into the droṇa-vessels; sit down in the receptacles, in the wombs (appointed for thee).
Mantra 8
वृषा सोम द्युमां असि वृषा देव वृषव्रतः वृषा धर्माणि दध्रिषे
Thou art the splendid bull, O Soma; a bull, a god, of potent ordinances; a bull that upholdest the sacred ordinances.
Mantra 9
इषे पवस्व धारया मृज्यमानो मनीषिभिः इन्दो रुचाभि गा इहि
Purify thyself, O Indu, with the flowing stream, being cleansed by the wise, for nourishment; with thy lustres go unto the cows (the kine, the wealth of the sacrificer).
Mantra 10
मन्द्रया सोम धारया वृषा पवस्व देवयुः अव्यो वारेभिरस्मयुः
Soma, with thy gladdening stream, with thy flowing current, vigorous (and potent), do thou purify thyself, desirous of the gods; pass through the sheep’s wool with the waters, seeking our (good).
Mantra 11
अया सोम सुकृत्यपा महान्त्सन्नभ्यवर्धथाः हिन्दान इद्वृषायसे
By this (process), Soma, guardian of holy rites, being great, thou hast increased; urged onward, verily thou puttest forth thy vigour.
Mantra 12
अयं विचर्षणिर्हितः पवमानः स चेतति हिन्वान आप्यं बृहत्
This Soma, moving amongst men, is placed (for the rite); purifying himself, he becomes manifest; urged onward, he (assumes) the great watery (form).
Mantra 13
प्र ण इन्दो महे तु न ऊर्मिं न बिभ्रदर्षसि अभि देवां अयास्यः
Flow forth for us, Indu, for (our) greatness; bearing (thy stream) like a wave, thou flowest, eager to approach the gods.
Mantra 14
अपघ्नन्पवते मृधो ऽप सोमो अराव्णः गच्छन्निन्द्रस्य निष्कृतम्
Removing (all) hostilities, Soma purifies himself; unharmed, he proceeds to the appointed place of Indra.
It praises Soma as he purifies himself while flowing: a radiant, powerful ‘bull’ who upholds sacred order and makes the sacrifice succeed.
The Sun highlights Soma’s brilliance and visibility, while Indra is named as the intended recipient—Soma proceeds to Indra’s prepared portion (niṣkṛta) in the rite.
It refers to driving away mṛdhaḥ—obstacles, hostile influences, and disruptions that could spoil the sacrifice—so the offering reaches its proper goal unharmed.
