Diti’s Penance, Indra’s Service, and the Severing of the Embryo
bhidyamānas tato garbho vajreṇa śataparvaṇā | ruroda susvaraṃ rāma tato ditir abudhyata || 1.46.19 ||
O Rama! that embryo, being severed by Vajra having a hundred edges, cried at high pitch which awakened Diti".
It foregrounds the reality of suffering caused by violence; dharmic reflection begins with recognizing the pain inflicted on the vulnerable.
The unborn child cries while being cut, and the mother (Diti) wakes up to the calamity.
The verse evokes compassion (dayā) in the listener by emphasizing the cry of the embryo.
