Kanyakāḥ (the maidens)

Concept: Dharma is āśrama-specific; actions (like marriage) become adharma when they violate the protected duty of the current life-stage.

Application: Before major commitments, check role-ethics: ask whether the action supports or breaks your present responsibilities; let conscience and śāstra-guided counsel override social pressure.

Primary Rasa: raudra

Secondary Rasa: vira

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A circle of resolute maidens stands within an āśrama courtyard, palms raised in firm refusal, their faces bright with moral certainty. A brāhmaṇa emissary faces them, surprised, as the sacred fire and study implements behind them emphasize the protected duty of their current āśrama.","primary_figures":["kanyakāḥ (maidens)","brāhmaṇa interlocutor","āśrama elders (optional)"],"setting":"Āśrama courtyard with agni, vedi, water pot, and hanging garlands; a boundary between domestic and ascetic spaces is visually marked.","lighting_mood":"golden dawn","color_palette":["ivory white","saffron","madder red","peepal green","ash gray"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: a group of maidens in traditional attire standing in a semicircle, assertive hand gestures, facing a brāhmaṇa near a glowing sacred fire; gold leaf highlights on jewelry and fire aura, rich reds and greens, ornate lotus border, strong frontal composition.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: delicate scene of maidens in an āśrama courtyard, refined expressions showing principled refusal, soft dawn sky, cool greens and warm saffron garments, fine architectural lines of a hermitage, lyrical trees and birds framing the debate.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlines—maidens with stylized eyes and expressive brows, dynamic hand mudrās of refusal, agni rendered in red-yellow gradients, patterned foliage, temple-wall palette emphasizing dharma’s gravity.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: narrative panel with maidens and brāhmaṇa framed by intricate floral borders, lotus motifs symbolizing purity, deep blue background with gold accents, peacocks and vines around the āśrama fire, textile-like ornamentation."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"dramatic","suggested_raga":"Durga","pace":"moderate-narrative","voice_tone":"authoritative","sound_elements":["sharp hand-clap cadence","temple bell punctuations","crackling fire","brief silence after refusal"]}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: विवाहोऽयम् = विवाहः + अयम्

FAQs

It states that dharma varies by āśrama (life-stage), and any rite—here, a marriage—should be judged by whether it preserves that dharma; otherwise it is not truly dharmic.

They imply the proposed or occurring marriage fails the standard of āśrama-appropriate duty as recognized and protected by the wise, so it should not be treated as a righteous act.

Social customs and rituals are not automatically righteous; they must align with contextual duty (āśrama-dharma) and withstand the scrutiny of the learned and principled.
