The Establishment of Vāmana at Kānyakubja and the Sanctification of Setu

तथा हि मधुरा चैषा या वाणी रामकीर्तने । कीर्तिता भगवन्मह्यं हृता कर्णसुखावह

tathā hi madhurā caiṣā yā vāṇī rāmakīrtane | kīrtitā bhagavanmahyaṃ hṛtā karṇasukhāvaha

Unspecified (context-dependent within Adhyāya 38; a devotee/sage addressing “Bhagavān”)

Concept: Nāma-kīrtana and kathā-śravaṇa are intrinsically sweet and purifying; devotion enters through the ears and captivates the heart.

Application: Make daily time for Rāma-kathā or nāma-japa; choose speech that is ‘madhurā’—truthful, beneficial, and devotionally uplifting.

Primary Rasa: shringara

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A devotee, eyes half-closed, listens as Rāma’s praise flows like honeyed music; the very syllables appear as golden script curling through the air and settling into the heart-lotus. In the background, a subtle vision of Rāma—serene, bow in hand—radiates calm, as if the sound itself has taken form.","primary_figures":["devotee/sage singer","Rāma (visionary form)","attendant listeners (optional)"],"setting":"Temple courtyard or āśrama veranda with a small lamp, palm-leaf text, and a vīṇā/tānpurā nearby; heart-lotus motif subtly integrated.","lighting_mood":"temple lamp-lit","color_palette":["lotus pink","warm amber","midnight indigo","ivory white","soft gold"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: central seated Rāma with gold leaf halo, while a devotee at the lower corner sings; stylized golden Sanskrit syllables of stuti arc toward a lotus at the devotee’s chest; rich reds and greens, ornate jewelry, gem-like highlights, temple arch with lamps and floral festoons.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: lyrical kīrtana scene on a veranda; devotee singing with gentle hand gesture, listeners attentive; faint translucent Rāma apparition in the sky; cool indigo evening, delicate brushwork, refined faces, soft floral borders and a quiet river or garden beyond.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlines of singer-devotee and radiant Rāma; stylized sound-waves as decorative bands; strong reds/yellows/greens with black contouring, temple-wall symmetry, expressive eyes conveying sweetness and absorption.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: Rāma centered within a lotus mandala, surrounded by concentric floral borders; below, kīrtana ensemble with hand cymbals and drum; peacocks at corners, hanging lamps, deep blue ground with gold filigree, emphasizing ‘ear-nectar’ devotion."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"devotional","suggested_raga":"Bhairavi","pace":"slow-meditative","voice_tone":"reverent-soft","sound_elements":["tanpura drone","soft mridangam","temple bells","gentle chorus response","silence between lines"]}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: चैषा→च एषा; भगवन्मह्यं→भगवन् मह्यम्; कर्णसुखावह treated as compound (karṇa-sukha-āvaha).

FAQs

It presents Rāma’s glorification as inherently “ear-pleasing” (karṇa-sukhāvahā), implying that devotional listening and recitation naturally delight the senses and draw the mind toward devotion.

By celebrating the sweetness of Rāma-kīrtana and its power to “captivate the heart,” it highlights devotion expressed through praise and heartfelt receptivity as a primary spiritual means.

It suggests cultivating speech that is uplifting—praise of the divine—since such words benefit both the speaker (heart is uplifted) and the listener (ears find joy).
