Concept: A small sensory restraint (renouncing mouth-perfume) sustained over time, sealed by go-dāna, yields a specific loka-phala—showing how niyama disciplines desire and redirects merit.

Application: Choose one vanity-driven habit to renounce for a set period (year/season), and conclude with a meaningful donation; treat restraint as inner purification, not self-punishment.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Type: celestial_realm

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A devotee sets aside fragrant mouth-perfumes, placing them away as a symbol of renounced vanity. At the year’s end, he offers a cow in a calm ritual space, while the background opens into an oceanic vision—Varuṇa enthroned amid waves and shimmering water-jewels, promising his serene realm.","primary_figures":["votary practitioner","brāhmaṇa recipient","cow (dhenu)","Varuṇa (deva of waters)"],"setting":"Riverside or coastal ritual pavilion transitioning into a celestial-ocean tableau; water pots, conch, and white cloths emphasize purity.","lighting_mood":"serene","color_palette":["sea green","pearl white","lapis blue","coral red","silver gray"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: foreground vow scene—devotee donating a cow to a brāhmaṇa; background reveals Varuṇa seated on a makara-throne over stylized waves; heavy gold-leaf on water highlights and Varuṇa’s crown, rich jewel tones, ornate borders, devotional symmetry.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: gentle coastal light with delicate wave patterns; devotee and brāhmaṇa in refined posture; Varuṇa as a subtle, elegant celestial figure above the horizon; cool blues and greens, lyrical naturalism, fine detailing of water pots and conch.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlines of Varuṇa with characteristic large eyes, makara motif, and patterned waves; foreground dāna scene simplified but iconic; strong red/yellow/green pigments with deep blue water field, temple-wall aesthetic.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: ocean rendered as patterned blue with lotus and conch motifs; ornate floral borders; narrative vignette of renunciation and go-dāna; Varuṇa centered above with gold accents, intricate textile-like repetition."}

V
Varuṇa

FAQs

It prescribes giving up mouth-perfume and, at the year’s end, donating a cow; the vow is said to lead to Varuṇa’s realm.

The verse states that the observer attains Vāruṇa-loka, the world/realm associated with the deity Varuṇa.

It links personal restraint (renunciation of a luxury) with generosity (go-dāna), presenting disciplined living and charitable giving as spiritually efficacious.
