Brahmā’s Puṣkara Sacrifice: Kokāmukha Tīrtha, Varāha’s Aid, and the Arrival of Gāyatrī

अश्रुतं प्रागदृष्टं च दृष्ट्वा तुष्टः प्रजापतिः । प्राग्वाटेति ददौ नाम वैश्यानां सृष्टिकृद्विभुः

aśrutaṃ prāgadṛṣṭaṃ ca dṛṣṭvā tuṣṭaḥ prajāpatiḥ | prāgvāṭeti dadau nāma vaiśyānāṃ sṛṣṭikṛdvibhuḥ

Narrator (contextual; the verse describes Prajāpati’s act rather than direct speech)

Concept: Creation includes not only beings but their roles and names; divine approval sanctifies skillful, dharmic activity.

Application: Recognize vocation as sacred when aligned with service; honor names/identities responsibly—use speech to bless, not to diminish.

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"Prajāpati stands in a luminous assembly, gazing with pleased astonishment at the newly organized community of Vaiśyas and their works. With a gesture of blessing, he bestows a name—‘Prāgvāṭa’—and the word appears as a radiant script in the air, sealing identity into the fabric of creation.","primary_figures":["Prajāpati (Brahmā as creator aspect)","Vaiśya community"],"setting":"A proto-cosmic court or creation-hall with subtle lotus motifs, suggesting the early ordering of society.","lighting_mood":"divine radiance","color_palette":["lotus pink","pearl white","sunlit gold","sky blue","emerald green"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: Prajāpati enthroned with four-faced Brahmā-like iconography (if desired), right hand in blessing, gold leaf halo; below, Vaiśyas present offerings and crafted goods; the word ‘Prāgvāṭa’ rendered as stylized glowing script, rich reds/greens, gem-studded ornaments, ornate pillars.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: a serene court scene with Prajāpati seated on a lotus-like cushion, delicate attendants, and a group of Vaiśyas with baskets and vessels; the bestowed name shown as faint calligraphic cloud, cool palette, refined facial features, lyrical space.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: Prajāpati with bold outlines and large eyes, blessing gesture; Vaiśyas in rhythmic rows; the name depicted as decorative band of script-like motifs, natural pigments, temple mural framing.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: lotus-filled backdrop with a central divine figure bestowing a name; ornate floral borders, gold detailing, symmetrical arrangement of community figures, deep blue field with lotus pink highlights."}

FAQs

It depicts Prajāpati’s satisfaction upon witnessing something unprecedented, followed by his bestowal of a specific name—“Prāgvāṭa”—upon the Vaiśyas, framing naming as a creative, order-establishing act.

Not directly. It belongs to the Sṛṣṭikhaṇḍa’s creation-and-order narrative; its focus is on Prajāpati’s creative authority and the assignment of identity, rather than devotional practice.

A philosophical takeaway is that identity and social functions are portrayed as intentionally structured within creation; the verse emphasizes responsibility in how names and roles are conferred and understood within a cosmic order.
