The Greatness of Offering Piṇḍas at Viṣṇvādipada (Viṣṇupada) — Gayā Śrāddha Procedure and Fruits
श्राद्धं कृत्वा रुद्रपदे नयेत्कुलशतं नरः । सहात्मना शिवपुरं तथा ब्रह्मपदे शुभे ॥ २१ ॥
śrāddhaṃ kṛtvā rudrapade nayetkulaśataṃ naraḥ | sahātmanā śivapuraṃ tathā brahmapade śubhe || 21 ||
Narada (in dialogue context with Sanatkumara tradition; Uttara-Bhaga tirtha-mahatmya narration)
Vrata: Śrāddha
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: bhakti
It states the tirtha-mahātmya principle: performing śrāddha at Rudra’s sacred abode yields extraordinary merit—uplifting one’s lineage (kulaśata) and granting the performer attainment of Śivaloka; similar auspicious fruit is affirmed for Brahmā’s abode.
While centered on ritual (śrāddha), it frames the rite as an offering performed at a deity’s holy seat (Rudra/Śiva), implying devotion expressed through prescribed karma; the fruit described (Śivapura) links reverent worship with spiritual ascent.
Kalpa (ritual procedure) is implicit: śrāddha as a codified pitṛ-rite performed at specific sacred sites (tīrthas), emphasizing correct performance, place-based merit (deśa), and dharmic observance.
