The Exposition of the Pratipadā Vrata for the Twelve Months
vatsarādau vasaṃtādau balirājye tathaiva ca | pūrvaviddhaiva kartavyā pratipatsarvadā budhaiḥ || 6 ||
Narada (instruction within a ritual/kalā-nirṇaya style passage)
Vrata: Pratipat observance (tithi-based; not a named vrata here)
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: none
It emphasizes Dharma through precision in sacred time (kāla): correct tithi-selection is itself a form of reverence, ensuring that rites at key transitions (new year, spring) align with scriptural order.
Bhakti is expressed not only by emotion but by disciplined observance; choosing Pratipat as pūrvaviddhā at major calendrical thresholds shows attentive, rule-guided worship that honors the intended sacred timing.
Vedāṅga-Kalpa and Jyotiṣa (pāñcāṅga practice): the verse teaches tithi-nirṇaya—specifically that Pratipat should be taken as pūrvaviddhā for these occasions, a technical rule used in ritual scheduling.
