Adhyaya 16 — The Son’s Counsel on Renunciation and the Anasuya–Mandavya Episode: The Suspension of Sunrise and the Power of Pativrata
देवा ऊचुः वरं वृणीष्व कल्याणि देवकार्यं महत् कृतम् ।
त्वया यस्मात् ततो देवा वरदास्ते तपस्विनि ॥
devā ūcuḥ varaṃ vṛṇīṣva kalyāṇi deva-kāryaṃ mahat kṛtam | tvayā yasmāt tato devā varadās te tapasvini ||
دیوتاؤں نے کہا—اے بھدرے، کوئی ور مانگو۔ تم نے دیوتاؤں کے لیے عظیم کام انجام دیا ہے؛ اس لیے، اے تپسوی عورت، ہم تمہیں ور دینے والے ہیں۔

Merit culminates in prasāda (grace). The gods’ offer indicates a Purāṇic ethic of reciprocity: selfless dharmic action becomes ‘deva-kārya’ and draws protective, uplifting returns.
Ākhyāna: the episode illustrates how tapas and dharma interface with the divine order; not a genealogical or cosmic-creation section.
A ‘boon’ symbolizes siddhi or sanctioned capability. The devas’ speech represents inner spiritual faculties acknowledging ripened discipline and offering higher possibilities.
